Our Founding Fathers knew what it was to be coerced at the point of a weapon. Prior to the Revolution they could be forced to provide housing, at their own expense, for the King’s Soldiers. There were many other abuses, for the one’s with the might (weapons) made the rules.
Our God given rights are exactly that, God given. Our Founding Fathers knew this, to a man. Government does not GIVE us our rights, they are a gift from God. The Constitution is the contract the PEOPLE made with the Government….not the other way around.
It is no surprise the Bill of Rights (the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution) spells out clearly all the things we the people cherish. Freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, freedom of speech and the right to petition the Government “for a redress of our grievances” are all found in the very first amendment.
It is the Second Amendment, however, that helps guarantee these aforementioned rights and all others. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE…..seems pretty clear. There is no confusion in this statement. You, me, should we determine to be armed, have that right.
TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS……I don’t believe our Founding Fathers would have had a problem with “large caliber assault weapons or high capacity magazines”. They after all, encapsulated our rights when the majority of gun owners supplied the military with their own
“advanced weaponry” to take on the King’s men.
SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED…..a Latin verb that means to commit a breach or infraction, to VIOLATE or TRANSGRESS. In our Founding Father’s words, leave our weapons alone and the land will remain free.
But, some say, the Government knows we need to restrict the sale of guns to criminals and mentally unstable individuals. There are abundant laws that restrict gun ownership from criminals and, shazam, they get them anyway! As to those troubled individuals who should not have a weapon within reach, it seems the family should be the first line of defense here, not Uncle Sam.
The President repeatedly makes statements that America is the only country in the world that has a problem with mass shootings. That is just not true. Have we so quickly forgotten the two mass killings in Paris in less than a year? Is anybody paying attention as Christians in Africa and the Middle East are being systematically slaughtered? Unfortunately, there are other mass shootings around the world.
Let’s, however, keep our focus on America. The first school shooting reported in America was November 12,1840. John Anthony Gardner Davis, a law professor at the University of Virginia, was shot and killed by a student. In the next 125 years there were 106 more incidents of school shootings. Less than one per year. The shootings over that century and a quarter resulted in 83 deaths.
Fast forward to 1966. Over the past 50 years we have seen a grand total of 246 shootings at schools. Roughly five per year. These shootings have resulted in 356 deaths! Over four times the deaths in the previous 125 years.
Some of that can be attributed to improved weaponry, but remember the majority of these killings were pulled off by people with only a cursory knowledge of the weapon. There has to be a deeper reason for the increased number of shootings.
Notice I divided the shootings at 1965. What turn did America make that year that may have inflamed a situation that had already existed? In 1965 America began to turn Her back on God.
Should anyone in politics truly care to see this problem dealt with at the core, we need to deal with our relationship with God at the very core. NO nation that turns it’s back on God will be blessed. Our Nation invited a monster into our midst and we don’t know how to rid ourselves of this ogre.
Ironically, that would require returning in repentance to the very One on whom we turned our backs. The road back starts with, “If my people, who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land”. 2 Chronicles 7:14.
Until the Church begins to lead America back to God, perhaps keeping that Constitutionally protected right to bear arms is a vital to our very survival!
