We watched in sadness as the community of New Mexico said goodbye to Officer Daniel Webster. We were shocked by the senseless murder of a precious four year old by an enraged driver. As New Mexicans we took that collective punch in the gut when Rio Rancho lost its first police officer at the hands of a violent criminal.
Turnstile justice? Psychotic episodes unleashed in public? A lack of judicial reform? I don’t think you sum it up with any of these popular arguments. So try this one on for size…..what we are witnessing is the inevitable demise of a society that has determined we neither want nor need God in our way.
We “old timers”….yes, us Baby Boomers grew up in the arms of the Greatest Generation who wanted us to have what they didn’t. God bless them. But their intentions backfired and we became the most spoiled, self-indulgent generation this nation has ever known. We gave birth to children who, for the most part, became even more self-absorbed and then came those who feel entitled to having their every whim and fancy met.
Along the journey we began to believe we really can do this thing called life on our own. We have determined we are god and we need no other. Our personal ten commandments include thou shalt have no other god besides me. It only gets worse from there.
Harkening for the good old days and pining for “what was” does nothing to help you see the truth of this day. Sitting on your porch pontificating that “this ain’t the way we did it” won’t help you see today’s situation. The past is past…we aren’t going back. What we face now is as stark as awakening from a coma to a zombie apocalypse and trying to live life like before. If you do, you fall prey to the walking dead.
So is there no hope? There’s always hope. Especially for God’s people. Paul does his best to shake us awake in Romans 13:11,12: “now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer then when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. LET US WALK PROPERLY…. It’s interesting that Paul’s command in the end days is to God’s people….let US walk properly.
Truth is, what we see now is just the tip of the iceberg. Evil men will grow more and more evil. We’ll try to hold them back but that will be an effort akin to emptying the ocean with a teaspoon as men grow worse. More physical weaponry, though it will make us feel safer, is not the answer. The answer has always been in the very thing from which man has attempted to free himself…..God.
