10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, 11 to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was lovely to look at. 12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. At this the king became enraged, and his anger burned within him. Esther 1: 10 – 12
This verse has been in my mind all day. This morning, on our radio show The HUB of New Mexico www.thehubnm.com we spoke with Pastor Dewey Moede about the recent UFC Women’s Bantamweight fight. You know the one where Holly Holm, from New Mexico, beat Ronda Rousey on Saturday night 11/14/15?
I have heard news reports calling this event as inspiring to New Mexico…I can only wonder why watching two women beating each other up can be called inspiring? The pictures I have seen of Ms. Rousey are horrific with her bloodied face as she stands in shame while Ms. Holm is celebrating her victory are confusing to me.
I have heard Ms. Holm’s is a preacher’s daughter. If this is the case does she know her true identity in Christ? Does she understand that she is the daughter of the King of Kings? If she did – would she be so quick to allow herself to be paraded and exploited?
Let’s be honest…when men watch two women fighting…what goes through their minds? The nature of a sinful man has and always will be to use women for his pleasure without considering her – just look at King Ahasuerus and his behavior thousands of years ago.
What message are we sending to our daughters, our granddaughters, our nieces, the young ladies in our youth groups – when we as God’s people – pastors even – celebrate events like this? God created women to be nurturers not fighters. We already are going against who we were created to be with the holocaust of abortion and killing our children. Now we are shedding (quite literally) the image that God created for us to be as women of God.
I am praying for women like Ms. Holm and Ms. Rousey that they will someday be like Queen Vashti and refuse to be exploited by men and I am praying that the men who are encouraging the violence and the exploitation by watching and cheering them on will stand up as a men of God and do their jobs as God’s protectors instead of as world’s predators.
